Freshen Up Your Blog with RSS Feed - HOWTO

Have you ever seen Feeders in other bloggers' blogs? We can also create feeder for our own use. The benefit we can see from the feeder or RSS feed is especially great if we have a lot of blogs. We can feed data from one blog to another. So, when visitors come to read our blog, they will just surf through out our blog networks and spend some more time to read more of our articles, posts, etc. from our related blogs.

One way to give our blog a Feeding capability is through FeedBurner. We will walk together and add RSS Feed capability to our blog. So, please follow the steps below.

1. Goto http://www.feedburner.com and input the blog we want to have RSS Feed on it. For example, supposed I want to have an RSS Feeder from the blog http://icejung.blogspot.com
So put your blog url in the box provided as the following picture. Click Next>> button.

2. FeedBurner will convert our blog into RSS Feed. After finished, we need to copy only URL RSS which in the picture below is http://icejung.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

3. After we copy the RSS Feed url, we will get to our blog that we need to add RSS Feed data. For this example, I will use my another blog http://kidsafeandfun.blogspot.com/ as a test drive blog. So, we will login to that blog first. After login goto the tab Layou => Page Elements and click Add a Page Element.

4. It will show the popup dialog. At the Feed section, click Add to Blog.

5. It will show the popup dialog Configuring Feed. Paste your RSS Feed url in the available box. Click Continue and Save Changes consecutively.

6. After that you can view your blog, you will see that the information from the RSS Feeder blog will appear on the blog you specify. The feed data will be update as soon as you modify your RSS Feeder's blog. This ways, you don't need to copy link or work on anything. See the example below on the RHS (right hand side).

Create a Sitemap for Blogger or Blogspot - HOWTO?

We can add sitemap to our blog by visiting Google Sitemap. This will let google bot crawl our blog and index it. So the information gathering process will be easier. Hence, making our blog more popular => higher PRs in the long run.

First of all, we need to goto Google Sitemap, Register with our Google account. For those of you who have no google account. It is recommended to sing up one at Gmail. When you have an account with google, you can insert your URL in the provided box and click Add Site or OK button.

Now, the blog will be in our list of the Account Webmaster Tool. We need to click at Verify your site link.

Goto the Choose verification method... dropdown list box and select Add a meta tag and copy meta tag

It is just easy. You can drag your mouse over the url tag as see in the picture below. Then you can right-click your mouse button and select copy.

You can then paste the url tag into your home page in the first section of the page, before the first section. Or for your blog, you can follow the instruction below.

Adding Sitemap (by Google) to your blog
1. Open your registered blogger account and select the tab Layout or Template. and select sub-tab Edit HTML. We will place to copied meta tag between the tag (head) (/head) and before the tag (title). When finished, Click Save Template button.

2. Go back to the Google Webmaster Tool page, Click Verify button under the message "I've added the meta tag in the home page of http://YOURBLOG.blogspot.com/."

It will show you a confirmation message. It will help google better crawl and index your web.
3. Look for the Menu bar on the Left. Select Sitemaps => Add Sitemap. In the Add Sitemap page, click at a dropdown listbox and select Add General Web Sitemap. In the number 3 below, type atom.xml in the box provided (after your blog url). Then click Add Genera Web Sitemap button.

PS. What is atom.xml?
Atom is an XML to send data to update the web page for content management. We can download from the website or from feeder program to see it in text format.
The blogger program comes with atom.xml (see the bottom of your blog, it said subscribe to: Posts (Atom)). So we can just use what blogger has to create the sitemap.

I, by chance, have visited SiamBlog Blogspot. I found several details in there very interesting. However, most stuffs are in Thai. So I think it might be a good idea to share this information in English for other bloggers who may interest to fine-tune or improve their personal blogs. Thank you to Ms. MeOmee for her valuable information regarding blog's tune-up!!!
